Joseph was the eleventh born son of Jacob and first born of Rachel, and also their favorite. His brothers, as one would expect, did not take kindly to their youngest brother (at the time) being allowed to avoid hard labor and receiving a lavish coat of many colors, and they grew jealous.
Joseph was given a gift from God to interpret dreams, and one of the dreams he interpreted showed his family bowing to him. This enraged his brothers further and in their jealousy, they sold him into slavery — a decision that unbeknownst to them, would save Egypt and their family from famine. Skipping forward some, Joseph was imprisoned over a false accusation, and through that, he remained faithful. He interpreted the dreams of two fellow prisoners, both of which came true. The Pharaoh, who had been plagued by dreams that nobody could interpret, found out through one of them (the chief cupbearer) that Joseph had the gift to interpret the dreams.
God, through Joseph, interpreted the dreams, which allowed Egypt to prepare itself for the famine that was to come. As a reward, Joseph was elevated above everyone except the Pharaoh. He and his 11 brothers, 1 born to Rachel after he was sold into slavery, became the figure heads of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Genesis 41:46
"Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout Egypt."
